New discoveries show that humans have been making handprints and painting scenes of animals on cave walls for over 50,000 years. In this class, students will learn how prehistoric peoples made the materials used to create these images. Students will grind earth colors into pigments, use traditional brushes and see how these ancient artists illuminated these underground spaces using only small flickering lamps. The motivations and techniques for applying paint to the walls will be explored as well as why certain animals were chosen to be illustrated. Students will have the opportunity to create handprints and to draw ice age animals with handmade charcoal and paints.
