Cave Painting 101: Make Your Own Ancient Art Supplies From Nature. Ages 8-12

Learn how prehistoric peoples made the materials used to create images. Practice grinding earth colors into pigment, use traditional brushes and create art in new ways.

Humans have been using earth colors for over 100,000 years to brighten and decorate their world. Students in this class will learn where those colors came from and the different techniques for processing, storing, and applying them onto cave walls, various objects and even themselves. After spending time painting and drawing ice age images, students will go home with pigments and brushes they have made themselves and the knowledge of where they came from and how they were utilized in the past.

  Overall class goals and objectives for ALL classes, camps and workshops:

  1. Learn how prehistoric peoples created a multitude of art and culture items from the natural materials around them.
  2. Learn how ancestral peoples made the tools and acquired the plant, animal and mineral resources to create art and culture items.
  3. Learn to appreciate the relationships these ancient peoples had with the natural world around them and how they lived in balance with it.
  4. Learn the STEM lessons presented from working with the tools and materials.
